Qualifications:
1980 - 1987: Welder. Having these
and other fabricating skills comes in very handy when dealing with the
myriad ways of making signs. Unfortunately, I lost this livelihood
due to a back injury.
1988, Camosun College: "Sign Painting - Basic". I was
very fortunate to take this course as it was only offered at that
particular time. Here I learned how to hand-letter with a brush, and
decided immediately that this was something that I seriously wanted to
pursue. I had always shown artistic tendencies, but never really
developed them. Heck, I even have a report card from grade two that
says: "He has very good letter formation". Destiny?
1989, Camosun College: "Sign Painting - Advanced".
At this point
I'm in love with this stuff. After completing the course, I got my first
job at a sign shop and soaked up information & techniques like a
sponge. In the next few years I gained more valuable experience and worked
at a couple of other sign shops.
1992, McKay Technical Institute: "Computer Graphic
Arts". This was a full-time course providing additional
computer and design skills. After finishing in the top of the
class, I gained more employment in a couple of other sign shops and then
started my own business in late 1993 and have had very few holidays
since!
In addition to the courses mentioned, I have also bought & read many books on
the sign business and have continued to push myself in a determined effort to get better & better
in the most important aspect of sign making......

The
neat thing in this business is that you never "arrive", there's always
something more to learn.
